Kinsta is unlike most WordPress hosting providers. And you will find out why along the way as you read this article which I write based on my experience of using their service.
I got to be honest with you, I only used their service for 12 hours. But that 12 hours is enough for me to strip all their services part by part and see whether if it’s any good. In other words, you can trust whatever I have to say about Kinsta.
1. Kinsta is premium
Kinsta brands themselves as a premium managed WordPress hosting provider. What does it mean by a premium managed WordPress hosting provider? They only accept WordPress websites and they charge a higher price compared to other WordPress hosting providers.
This is clearly the first point which proves that Kinsta is unlike most WordPress hosting providers.
2. The higher price
There are eight pricing options made available; $30 per month, $60 per month, $100 per month, $200 per month, $300 per month, $400 per month, $600 per month and $900 per month.
Each and every pricing option comes with its own set of features that may or may not look appealing to you. Because after all, you guys are the bosses of making these kinds of choices.
3. What I think about Kinsta’s pricing and features
In my opinion, it’s pricey considering the capabilities that come with each plan.
I think you will think the same as I elaborate on its pricing and features on the following point.
4. The elaboration
The cheapest plan offered by Kinsta is priced at $30. Only one WordPress installation is allowed and it has been capped to receive a monthly visits of 20,000. Other than that, it has an SSD storage space of 5GB and CDN worth 50GB.
But of course, there is more to the plan, for example, there is the money back guarantee, 24/7 support and etc. But when it comes to maintaining a healthy WordPress website, the monthly visits limit, storage space and performance are placed above other factors.
Don’t worry tho, I will get to the other parts of it’s other features later down the road.
Coming back to the main features of their cheapest plan, I got to say that it’s pricey. Especially if compared to normal WordPress hosting providers such as Bluehost, SiteGround, HostGator and so so. For instance, HostGator’s cheapest plan is only priced at $14.95 per month and it comes with unlimited of SSD storage space and 100,000 monthly visits limit.
See the difference?
But then, Kinsta is not a normal WordPress hosting provider. It’s
5. So the question is, what’s premium about Kinsta other than it’s pricing?
Google Cloud Platform. That’s their selling point for their whole premium get-up.
You see, Google Cloud Platform is a cloud computing service that is operated by Google. What is a cloud computing service? A cloud computing service is a type of service that delivers computing resources such as servers, storage space, software applications and more.
Google Cloud Platform is so good even Google uses it for their line of products such as Google Search Engine, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail and so on.
However, when it comes to setting up a WordPress website with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), that’s when it becomes not so good anymore. Unlike normal WordPress hosting providers where you can just set up a WordPress website with just a few clicks of a button, you will need to go through a string of steps which involves deploying a server, transferring the existing files of your WordPress website to your newly deployed server in GCP (this is for existing WordPress website owners), purchasing the domain name separately and setting it up by yourself and etc. The worst part is that there is no one to walk you through for all these steps. What you see what you get and you have to work with what you get.
On the plus side, you get extraordinary performance and you save cost as you are only charged for what you have used. So for instance, if you only used $2 worth of resources for the particular month, you only pay $2.
In short, Kinsta is Google Cloud Platform for WordPress made easy. And that’s what makes them
As a result, they confidently charge a higher price compared to normal WordPress hosting providers. I think it’s acceptable.
6. Setting up a WordPress website with Kinsta
If you are setting up a brand new WordPress website with Kinsta, here’s what you need to do.
Sign up for one of their plans, install WordPress by using their easy to use form, purchase a domain name from a domain name registrar and connect
If you are an existing owner of a WordPress website, you will need to sign up with one of their plans, install WordPress, connect the domain name of the existing WordPress website to the new WordPress installation and migrate all the files of the existing WordPress website to the new WordPress installation. You can even request a free WordPress migration service.
Based on the above, setting up a WordPress website with Kinsta is a walk in the park. However, it’s not suitable for beginners. This is because you are not able to register a new domain name and tie it up with Kinsta’s hosting plan under one roof.
But even if you are a beginner, and you really want Kinsta so bad, you can easily get the job done by consulting their 24/7 available experienced support team. There’s also plenty of tutorials published in their knowledge base section for you to easily get your way around.
7. The data centers
Data centers are sort of like wifi modems that work on a worldwide scale.
For example, if the data center of your WordPress website is located in Dubai, then your website will load faster for visitors in Dubai. The website will load slowly for visitors from other locations.
In other words, the data center location of your WordPress website is important.
Why I’m talking about data centers out of nowhere? Well, when you are installing WordPress with Kinsta, you will be asked to select a data center location. Here’s a screenshot:
As you can see, there are a bunch of locations laid out. In fact, there are nineteen locations.
- Eemshaven in
- Frankfurt in Germany
- Hong Kong
- Iowa in
UnitedStates of America
- London in
- Los Angeles in
UnitedStates of America
- Montreal in Canada
- Mumbai in India
- Northern Virginia in
UnitedStates of America
- Oregon in
UnitedStates of America
- Sāo Paulo in Brazil
- South Carolina in
UnitedStates of America
- Sydney in Australia
- Tokyo in Japan
- Zurich in Switzerland
In other words, no matter where your WordPress website is based in this world, you can surely get it to load as quick as the speed of light by selecting the appropriate data center.
8. I put their performance to test
As mentioned earlier, I tested out all their services within 12 hours time. In that 12 hours period, I also tested the performance of the WordPress website.
The data center that I selected for the WordPress website
I published three posts in the WordPress website and left everything in default.
I then used Pingdom’s website speed test and tested the loading time from London.
The following is the result:
As you can see, the website loads in 1.73 seconds. And this is achieved without enabling their CDN or any other third party caching services.
After I enabled their CDN, the website’s loading time further reduces to 1.37 seconds.
The website also loads fast in other locations besides London. For example, the website loads within 2.31 seconds in Germany.
It loads within 2.63 seconds in San Francisco.
And it loads under 3 seconds in other locations.
9. Kinsta’s control panel
As mentioned earlier in point number five, Kinsta has created an easy to understand control panel to create a WordPress website. But, the control panel is more than just for that reason.
The control panel also allows you to view the resources that you have used, view the websites you have and view other important analytics such as unique visits, data transfer, CDN usage and etc.
It looks cool too!
10. User management
Another cool thing which you can do with the control panel is manage users.
As long as I have been lurking around the WordPress hosting industry, this is my first time encountering this feature.
It basically allows you to add users to manage the different sections in Kinsta’s control panel.
As you can see from the screenshot above, you can grant access for up to 10 users via email address to manage the whole Kinsta control panel or manage only the websites or manage only the billing information.
But if the above is too broad, you can also grant access based on the individual sites which you have.
For example, you can grant the Administrator access to allow the user to have full access to the site and, manage site level users or you can grant the Developer access which allows the user to only access to staging, but not the live site.
Kinsta is still considered a new name in the WordPress hosting industry as they begun in business in 2013. But their unique nature quickly sprouted among WordPress users which what makes them so popular today despite the high price tag. And I think their unique nature is also the main backbone of their growth. They even manage to attract the big players to host with them such as Ubisoft, ASOS, Intuit and TripAdvisor.
Overall, Kinsta is worth the additional bucks. And I’m saying this based on their unique + useful control panel, the smart use of Google Cloud Platform, the performance and the array of data center choices.
