In WooCommerce, a product category is something that helps you organize the products in your WooCommerce store. Think of it like the drawers on a file cabinet.
In other words, you get to group the products that belong together so that it will be easier for your shoppers to browse for products and it’s also easier for you to manage the products in your store.
Here I will show you how to add a product category in WooCommerce.
To begin, head over to the Categories section in the back-end of your WooCommerce store.
Here, you will be greeted with a section similar to the WordPress category. In fact, the way they both work are quite similar too.
The first thing you will see here is the Uncategorized category and a form for you to add a new product category.
This Uncategorized category is the default category and it can’t be deleted. Products which you did not assign any categories to will end up here.
In my opinion, if you don’t wish to have this Uncategorized category to appear in your store, you can rename it to a product category which you intended to add in the first place.
To rename it, simply click on the Edit button.
And edit the name and slug.
Followed by updating the changes.
You basically have added your first category.
You can also upload a thumbnail for the category.
This thumbnail will actually appear on the main shop page if you choose to display the product categories on the main shop page.
On the other hand, if you are wondering what is the Display Type all about, it’s basically the contents of the category page.
If you select the Default option, the category page will display what your WooCommerce theme has set. If you select the Products option, the category page will display the products that belong in the category. If you select the Subcategories option, the category page will display the subcategories (I will show you how to add subcategories later on in this post) of the category. And if you select Both, the category page will display both the products and the subcategories.
The Description field is for you to add the description of the category.
Some WooCommerce themes will show this description and some will not show it.
And finally, the Parent category is how you set a category to be a subcategory. If this is the first category you are adding, then you won’t be able to make it a subcategory. This is because, to have a subcategory, you will first need to have a parent category. In other words, the first category which you are adding should be a parent category. And it should be set to None.
The next category which you add can be a subcategory. Just select the category which you want to make it a subcategory to.
However, if you prefer to keep the Uncategorized category and add a brand new category from scratch, you can do so by using the Add new category fields provided.
Simply enter the name, enter the slug, leave the parent category as none, input the description, select the display type and upload a thumbnail image. Followed by clicking on the Add new category button.
Once you have added this new category, the next category which you add can be a subcategory to this new category. Just remember to set the Parent category of the next category properly.
