If you “google” the definition of Attribute, you will come to understand that Attribute simply means a feature or a quality that is part of someone or something.
When it comes to WooCommerce, attribute means a feature that is part of a product that is being sold. For instance, if you are selling pens, the ink color should be one of the attributes. This way shoppers will know what ink colors a particular pen which you are selling is available in.
Having attribute assigned to a product in your WooCommerce store organizes the way you sell products. On top of that, it also allows shoppers to understand a product in a more detailed manner.
How to add an attribute in WooCommerce
To add an attribute, head over to the Attributes section in WooCommerce.
Next, specify what the attribute is about in the provided field and click Add Attribute. Here’s an example:
Once that’s done, you will need to configure the terms of the attribute. For example, if the attribute you added is Color, then you will need to add the colors associated with the attribute. To configure the terms of the attribute, click on the Configure Terms link.
After that, begin adding the attribute terms one by one.
That’s all you need to do.
How to assign an attribute in WooCommerce
To assign an attribute to a product in your WooCommerce store, head over to the product editing screen and click on the Attributes tab under the Product data section.

The attributes should appear in the Additional information section of the product page:
Filter Products by Attributes
Another reason to assign attribute for the products in your WooCommerce store is to allow shoppers to refine their search while searching for a product in your store. As you may already know, WooCommerce comes with a few widgets that allows shoppers to filter their product search in an advanced way. For example, there is the Filter Products by Price widget which allows shoppers to filter products in your WooCommerce store by price. And there is the Filter Products by Rating widget which allows shoppers to filter products based on ratings. There’s also the Filter Products by Attribute widget which allows shoppers to filter the products by attribute.
So, having attribute assigned to the products in your WooCommerce store, you will be able to display the Filter Products by Attribute widget and get shoppers to refine their search based on the attribute.
Use attribute for product variations
On the other hand, the attribute can also be used for the variable products in your store.
To do this, head over to the variable product editing screen and click on the Attributes tab.
Next, select the attribute from the dropdown option and click Add.
After that, check the box that says Used for variations and select the terms.
And save it.
Once that’s done, head over to the Variations tab.
Here, select the Add variation option and click Go.
And you will be able to add the product variations based on the attribute.
